Arthritis Foundation

Arthritis is a daily fact of life for about 30 million Americans. Arthritis and its related diseases such as fibromyalgia account for millions of cases of disability and millions of days of lost work or lost participation in normal activities. A value resource for both arthritis patients and their families and friends can be found in the Arthritis Foundation, reachable online at www.arthritis.org .

The Arthritis Foundation provides information and advocacy for the 27 million Americans dealing with osteoarthritis, the 1.3 million with rheumatoid arthritis and an estimated 300,000 children dealing with juvenile arthritic diseases. Related bone, joint and connective tissue diseases are also addressed. The foundation publishes a subscription magazine called “Arthritis Today” which is also available on newsstands. The magazine offers a free trial copy and can be found at www.kable.com/pub/atht/freeTrial.asp .

The Arthritis Foundation has many outreach programs including town hall meetings on rheumatoid arthritis in local communities. Local meeting dates and times can be found at http://www.arthritis.org/letstalkra.php and a free communications kit is also offered for discussing your care with your personal physician. This is just one of many free publications the foundation offers on the website. Another very valuable service offered on the foundation website is the Drug Guide, www.arthritis.org/drug-guide.php , a complete and up to date listing of all arthritis medications in use, their effects and side effects. This helps to supplement information provided by one’s personal physician and helps understanding of how to best deal with the disease. This service is entirely free as well.

Another one of the Arthritis Foundation resources is the Disease Center where each arthritic condition has its own pages with information about that specific condition. A patient or other interested party can learn about the symptoms and treatments available as well as finding facts about devices and methods to make living with the illness easier. The link for this section is www.arthritis.org/conditions-treatments.php .

Registration with the Arthritis Foundation site is free and offers the e-mail newsletter “Mind Body Spirit” also at no cost. Included in the newsletter is information about Ease of Use products which the foundation certifies as meeting the needs of persons with arthritis. The website also has a list of products in every category from appliances to diabetic supplies on this page: www.arthritis.org/ease-of-use-new.php .

When you purchase items with the Ease of Use seal, you can expect an enhanced quality of life. The Arthritis Foundation has been active in research, advocacy and resources since 1948 and continues today to be the single most helpful site for individuals and families dealing with these diseases. They even provide a free guide for the newly diagnosed, “Just Diagnosed,” found on the resources page, www.arthritis.org/resources.php . Donations also support the many research programs striving to find cures for arthritis and better treatments for existing cases.
